Recently two of my social media connections shared about their depression. It reminded me of my own depression last year.
I was in a dark place and felt very disconnected from myself. Often I looked down myself and wondered “who is this guy?” I did not recognise myself in myself. But I also knew, I was in the best possible place. I was convinced something amazing will come out of that season. Now I feel more at home in myself than I ever did.
What I learned is, unpleasant emotions (including depression) are a call to action (which can include rest). Even though it feels like it, they are not a sign of defeat. They are, however, a sign of a violation of one or more of our values.
Depression happens when you feel you have to accept a loss of something you value but you are not willing to let it go. You know that is fine.
Take some time and ask, what is it that you feel was violated or lost? Name the underlying value and look at what you can do to live into this value instead of fighting it.
